Clean Sky 2 and future regional aircraft, successfully completed the experimental tests on the Morphing Winglet

As part of the Airgreen2 Project of Clean Sky 2 REG IADP, the experimental ground tests campaign for the structural validation of the Adaptive Winglet was successfully completed in July 2021.

The design of the Adaptive Winglet has been in charge of CIRA and has been developed in collaboration with Tecnam and Umbra to meet the requirements provided by Leonardo, and referred to the future TP90 regional aircraft. Implementing a unique design, the winglet is equipped with 2 independent movable morphing surfaces, capable of increasing the aerodynamic efficiency of the wing while actively controlling the loads at the wing interface.

The aim of the experimental campaign was to demonstrate the ability of the winglet structure and its morphing devices to resist the highest operational loads and to guarantee, in those conditions, the required functionality in terms of rotations of the moving parts in spite of the induced deformations. Such target was accomplished, and no critical accumulation of stresses was recorded.

Test results will serve as Means of Evidence (MOE) for the “Permit to Flight"  that LEONARDO will request for the flight test campaign foreseen in 2022.
